Can I Cover A Brick Chimney With Rock

If you're not having fun, do not!

On YouTube one can find interesting and curious things. Before I go on holiday, I leave to your consideration of these I found recently. If the search bar type "how to architect, find a particular character who has placed different videos. In general I would say that what is most striking of these is the affection he feels for the profession. And if you get to work in architecture without loving her, better not do it! There will always be other ways to make a living selling gum or being a sports commentator.

Enjoy the video! I'll enjoy my vacation!

I have the pleasure to share with you the words of honor that he received the draft of the "Livable Springs, developed originally as a study, and presented earlier in the "Holcim Awards" last year. I leave you with pictures and a brief overview of the project.

" Springs Livable Environmental Recovery of Guayaquil Salado."

Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city. It has more than 3 million people, which are distributed in an area larger than the 45,000 hectares which tantamount to an urban area larger than Buenos Aires or Barcelona. And the population growth the city does not stop. Guayaquil is the largest center of economic development and as such, is always an attractive destination for those seeking to improve their income and quality of life. Most of these migrants come from within the country. Unfortunately for most of them, the conditions of life that the city offers are miserable. Sad to say, but has Guayaquil informal settlements that lack optimal urban development, up more than 40 or 50 years.

This project was born out of our concern for the relations that exist between urban and natural events that surround it. Being a port city, Guayaquil consider it appropriate to analyze how events affect the existing hydrographic nearby. Of these events stand the Guayas River and estuary Salado.

03inhabitabledocks

focus our interest in the process of occupation used by invaders that are installed on the banks of the estuary, it is these that have brought the worst consequences for the nature of that sector. The invaders often build their humble homes in a very informal, over the waters of the estuary. These houses are settled on stilts; that most mangrove trunks. The materials used for walls are from recycled wood and cardboard. Also, plastic sheeting and zinc found in the trash were rescued to build the roof. These are not built under the supervision of any calculator. Additionally, do not have any system for sewage, so that its inhabitants are forced to dump their human waste to the waters on which they live and sleep. For everything you explained and must include a municipal law in force, according to which the land arising as a result of the filling done under their homes, gives property right on the lot that they themselves have created. Usually, this stuffing is made of waste from other works, who have nowhere throwing their waste.

All this has caused the disappearance of the original banks of the estuary in the study area. There are cases of mangrove islands that have been wiped out, precisely because the process of occupation.

05inhabitabledocks

In my opinion, what is proposed as an intervention at the site must meet the following requirements:

    • should provide a better place space as well as in the security sector requires people to live on.
    • should allow the banks of the stream can be retrieved, so you can develop mangrove reforestation plan in them.
    • Due to its proximity to the city, the stream can not be understood more as a natural area outside. Instead, the estuary must be understood and city as an urban space with natural features. Po Thus, the estuary will be scheduled activities for its residents, making so I understand the estuary as space itself and as something external and alien.
    • Within the logistics of sustainable construction, would be a great success to the new solution not only benefit those who currently live on the waters of the estuary, but also to those living in adjacent blocks in land.

Met all those considerations together in a structure which we call "The Living Spring."

06inhabitabledocks

is a structure of 30 m. minimum length, with the typical structure of a pier, but oversized. In addition to serving for the berthing of boats and small boats, the dock floor is designed to load on the structure of the houses of the inhabitants of the estuary. These docks would be built to the fabric of the streets perpendicular to the shore of the estuary.

His columns have a separation of 5 meter, and the height of them have more than 5 meters high. This would allow 10 small houses to attach to the top of the structure of the floor spring . The only restrictions would be the inhabitants of the docks, with respect to the construction their homes, have to do with weight and volume. This last detail gives a tinge of "surprise element" to the project, as the final finish of the houses would all residents. We as architects would not have any security on their end walls. The spring floor

promote further activities related to the estuary, which should especially its inhabitants, who tend to be-mostly-seeking employment.

inhabitabledocks02

The spring floor not only provides benefits in the lives of its occupants. The intervention site has water and electricity. The spring floor provides such services to their occupants, connecting to existing networks in the city. However, the sector has not chosen to intervene with a system of sewage collection. ; therefore been considered to implement a small treatment plant sewage beneath the pier, next to its foundation on the ground. These small plants would have sufficient capacity to treat sewage from the houses located in front spring.

04inhabitableblocks

Finally, to comply with the transfer of homes on the lagoon towards the structures of the docks, large open areas on the banks would be reforested with native species of mangrove. This would help to better and prompt environmental recovery of the estuary.

Ultimately, improving the space, improve the infrastructure of the site, and performs the long-awaited recovery of urban event natural event. That's not the mission architecture. bring benefits to residents. Troubleshooting sound and beneficial way.

Music for Architects?

Two videos displayed on YouTube. The first is a recommendation of Jaime Lopez. A good poppy song, entitled "The Architect", a Belgian group called "Deus" (Never Heard before). While the song can not hide the fact that the girl of any member of the band went with an architect The same letter warns the members of the guild, about something that is-simultaneously-the engine of our work, the source of our strength in difficult times and what we become unbearable to others: the ego.

In contrast, the second video is taken from the trunk of my memories. The song "Through These Architect's Eyes" by David Bowie. Guardo true love this song, it came to me when I was at the great crossroads of returning to study architecture or stay working, "as he did in those days, in the world of television.

Unfortunately, Bowie never made a video for this song. But an architecture student has an amateur video he produced to accompany the song.

song is very motivating. I do not know if I am mistaken in thinking that this song helped in part to put the balance in favor of architecture. Anyway, I have never regretted the decision. About

Bowie architects mentioned in the lyrics of this song, I should clarify that at the time, I had just crossed the middle of the second year of architecture. At that time, was unable to understand the magnitude of the beauty of Richard Rogers, and was also unaware of the terrible and consequences that had unclean thoughts and Phillip Johnson's architectural work in the world.

Even so, Enjoy!

Life Glitch On Dune Buggy

David Lynch: Surreal and dematerialized. WHO BETTER THAN

David_Lynch

Discuss David Lynch is talking about the greatest exponent of surrealism that we've seen to this day. The heir to the legacy of director Luis Buñuel and Kafka has explored since its initial work, how to blur the line between reality and imagination. And such examinations have taken place not only in cinema. It has also been involved in other arts, like painting, comics, television and furniture design. It currently has a web page, which presents his latest vision to those who are willing to pay for such service. But where Lynch is the film moves like a fish in water. It manages to break the cinema where the definitions that structure our perception of reality.

eraserhead 01

Lynch became known in the film world in 1977 with his debut "Eraserhead" or "Eraser Head" in English. In a dark room, shot in black and white, between industrial and decadent, Lynch tells the story of Henry Spencer, a character who inspired the name of the movie with your particular hairstyle (curiously unusual, as punishable by Lynch). Henry Spencer is an individual between weak, kind and naive, very ably played by Jack Nance. Spencer works in a printing press, and yet constantly told you're on vacation, an ironic way to begin to break schemes reality on the tape. The story flows without an ordered structure, until there is a meeting between Henry and Mary X, his former girlfriend. Mary invites him to dinner at home with their parents, and at that meeting when he learns of an unexpected news: Henry Spencer's father. It is at this point that gives the breakdown of the story introduces us to the second act. Unlike what happens in these cases, the son of Henry and Mary is an adorable baby. More However, it is a grotesque creature, totally removed from human nature. Henry Spencer gives face to the facts, and marries Mary. Then she and the "child" is going to live with the afflicted parents.

Within the daily life of the new Spencer family, the grunts and noises emitted by the baby constantly are exasperating. Henry deals with them, somewhat resigned, as if the battle has already been lost long ago. Mary reacts differently. She becomes a sort of hourglass, where each bead corresponds to a crying child. Then comes the time when it is filled and decides to leave, leaving behind the creature that came out of his belly and the naive who put it there. Henry Spencer would then have to be a father and mother of this creature, when he wants and does not feel as their own. Nice dilemma for a story that is constantly repeated on the planet, but through the lens of David Lynch is told in a unique and unrepeatable.

"Eraserhead" was a project that took 6 years to complete. At that time, nobody was interested in giving money to a film. After all, it was a script of only 20 pages, spread over connected to a short film with a film of 108 minutes. Lynch is the perseverance that allows you to finish this movie, and gain recognition his abilities as a director and writer, very much against the forecast by many. After

Eraserhead, David Lynch's life was not the same. While the planned special hours, from midnight, many eminent film showcases the talents embodied in that tape. Stanley Kubrick was defined as "the best movie I have seen." Mel Brooks saw the tape, and immediately proposed to Lynch to direct his next production "The Elephant Man." A similar reaction was George Lucas, who asked Lynch to direct Return of the Jedi ", the sixth chapter of his saga" The Star Wars. " Lynch Brooks accepted the proposal, which came out a masterpiece with 8 Oscar nominations.

"Eraserhead" is a complex film. It is not linear, with simple and immediate meanings. Overall, Lynch's film work requires the full attention of the viewer, as well as intellectual involvement in their stories.

eraserhead 02

To date, Lynch has rejected explain his film. Many link it to the stage where the director lived in Philadelphia, during his student years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, as it is during this time that the young David Lynch must confront notions the creation of the artwork and parenting situations similar metals in the mind of an artist.

During his tenure as director, David Lynch will continue to explore new ways to thwart the reality in his films. Nothing is something unbreakable for him: the characters, locations and events are "strippable" according to his vision, so a character can be played by two actors, or a character may actually be two, and may even the point of presenting a character to tell a guest who is not with him, but at home, as happened in "Lost Highway."

david lynch 01

However, the cinematographic work of David Lynch is so well done, that manages to shock the viewer, though put on alert on their intentions and strategies. A good example is the dream that tells one of the characters in "Mulhollnad Drive on horrible creature he had seen in his nightmares, just behind the cafe where you are, and as detailed in your description, the character is in reality with the aforementioned beast, taking us to reflect on whether it reflected on the big screen was real, or part of the vagaries of the mind of the character.

In its last production, "Inland Empire" Lynch is proposing much more ambitious goals and reach them. Fundamentally, we can say that the objective is to achieve complete disappearance of the narrative itself. It's a movie worth seeing, despite its nearly three hours long. As one known, speaking about this film: "in this case should change the cover of popcorn and a thermos full of coffee." A stimulant for the mind to want to leave with more questions than answers and is willing to question everything, walking in the outskirts of a movie, figuring if the streets where they are really walking.

the portal "Whohub." HELL IN THE TOWER

Just over a week, I received an invitation from the portal Whohub to respond to an interview about my activities as an architect and blogger. The interesting thing interviews is to make you think they are like a test that can go unstudied. Then, the results of this interview:

entrevista

ARCHITECTURE What is your major in architecture?

Architectural design and architectural supervision

Any website or blog where we can do something about your job?

Very little. I think I have only a few works of mine on my blog.

What is it a good architectural design?

A good piece of architecture is, in my opinion-a space created not only by the manipulation of matter, but for the intervention of the metaphysics of architecture tools: light, shadow, space, gravity. Good management of these metaphysical tools to manage food and shelter space in the spirit of the users.

What historical era of architecture is the one you love?

the twentieth century, although much studying I offense European Gothic cathedrals and the most important works of the Roman Empire.

The name of a famous building that you do not like anything

All the buildings of Frank Gehry Guggenheim Bilbao post seem unnecessary repetition. Curiosities such as sculpture, fetish as unnecessarily complicated and architecture.
I also greatly dislike the Colosseum in Rome. Regardless of your majesty, I can not admire a construction whose ultimate function was to kill people.

What hardware, software as essential tools you use in your work?

paper, pencil, sketchup, auto CAD, 3D Studio, Photoshop.

What city do you live or work and why?

Both my work and my professional training were constantly fluctuating between Guayaquil and Quito, Ecuador's major cities. I do not think there is a specific reason for this situation. Simply, those were the cities where I had the opportunity to do my work. Roll on the other cities that want to introduce new professional challenges.

Do you work with other architects? How did the team?

Currently, I am reopening my independent architectural study, after three years of overseeing the construction of the largest bus terminal in Ecuador (75,000 m² building, 155,000 square feet of intervention). For now, work with a collaborator in this project. Much like to invite to participate in my architectural projects for my ex-students of the university. I draw much of their professional and academic curiosdiad, and I think the projects they are involved is the same.

What do you think of the contests? What kind of contests you usually present?

are stressful, exhausting, but I love. Whenever I can I inscirbo diene in international architectural competition.

How respects the identity of the environment while maintaining the signature of a building?

A building must submit new elements that "talk" with their neighbors. Without falling into the rough tactics of the imitation, the new building must be placed with such care in the existing urban environment, giving the impression of always being there, no matter how different they are its design and construction materials.

admire what architects, historical and contemporary? Historical

: Mies van der Rohe, Wright, Piranesi, Le Corusier, and Barragán. Contemporary
: Alberto Campo-Baeza, Oscar Niemeyer, Mathias Klotz, Herzog & de Meuron.

In your professional philosophy, which is before the function or form?

function is the one that generates a form, basically. But plastic also fills a need for expression of a community. There should be a balance between them. The architecture of today must be halfway to the sheds and mausoleums.

Do you see the urban landscape as an ecological threat and a waste of resources? Will you advocate a more dense and vertical urbanism? Indeed

. The urban landscape, this poor result of the "Garden Cities" is a completely unnecessary waste of resources. Guayaquil, the city where I live, has some 45,000 hectares, but has just three million inhabitants. Ie has a larger area of \u200b\u200bBuenos Aires or Barcelona, \u200b\u200bcounting only the third or fifth of its population. Infrastructure is expensive and few benefits, a model of urban development led and manipulated by traffickers infertile land on the perimeter of the hare been carefully.

How will a single family home in 2050?

Changes in the family home will not give timing issues, but urban conflicts across each city. There will be changes in family homes in Montana and Australia; but it could be Tokyo, Mumbai, Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Sao Paolo or Mexico City find condos where the kitchens and dining rooms to become communal areas.

What new materials will arouse more interest?

I called a lot of attention this transparent hormgón invented in Mexico.
In general, plastic concrete value is fascinating. I think we have not exploited to its full potential yet.

Bioclimatic architecture, home automation systems ... "Approaching a profound revolution in architecture?

The same was said of postmodernism of deconstruction, and high-tech. I believe that architecture continues, and as it always has, will in spite of these trends and stigmas.

In developing a project, do you feel closer to your customers, or the public who use it?

I think closer to the users is also a way to approach the customer. The client lost, if your investment is not entirely friendly to its inhabitants.

"The pharaohs built pyramids, and bankers skyscrapers, architecture will always be a symbol of power?

Architecture is a human expression, both individually and collectively. The banker is reflected in its skyscrapers, in the same way that the worker is reflected in the house purchased or built for his family.

Imagine an ideal home for you, where would be? What would it be?

By the sea. I wish I had the Pacific Ocean and the Antarctic Humboldt current table, all the windows of the house. You must also have a huge study, which, probably, I spend most of the time.

Can I copy to be original?

No. You can interpret the past. But the copy without interpretation will never be a path leading to the originality or recognition.

Where is the balance between architecture rooted and responding to their time?

The proportion and common needs of the site, those that do not vary with time. Architecture

show, are increasingly building media phenomena?

media appearance of the buildings is somewhat circumstantial. The reason for this demonstration mediatica of the architecture is that that produced the Roman Coliseum, the high European cathedrals, the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan and the Empire State: the manifestation of power.

What theme would you like to see written on the entrance of the school of architecture?

himself available Vitruvius motto, the motto has been more invariable in its history architecture: Firmiter, VTILITAS, VENVSTAS.

What would be your dream project at the moment?

I would love to design a museum or a library that will match what is the Guayaquil today. Do not abandon my dream of intervening not scale city \u200b\u200bby the river Guayas, to make integrated river city again.

Your favorite artist

Above all, Jorge Luis Borges in the mind and Pink Floyd in their ears.

BLOGGER

What is the address of your blog? What topics you treat?

http://ladrillazos.blogspot.com. In this blog I share my concerns about architecture, city, cinema and contemporary art in general.

What made you create your blog? What what date it starts?

What started in January 2005. Alfredo Mora, a friend of mine who already had some time blogging, I recommended it. I followed his recommendation, almost therapeutic.

Blog What system have you adopted and why?

blogger I chose simply because it was the most had at hand. Nothing more.

How many visitors you get per day? What kind of feedback from visitors?

Today, I receive between 70 and 150 visitors a day. The comments have been both for and against of my approach.

What has brought you have a blog?

Besides being an avenue of relief from all the frustrations that may have a modernist architect in the South American tropics, I have done much to find someone who shares my way of Pansa. That's a relief.
I lick a lot of attention to see how one's mind becomes more considerate in the middle through a blog. Originally, I read those were just my ex-students of the Faculty of Architecture. Now when I give a seminar and take references already published on my blog, I listen to that among the students whisper: "The teacher is 'bricks'! ".

Have you established relationships with other bloggers or some of your readers?

Definitely! There are characters that have never seen in person, but my friends and consiero. They are so outstanding in my blog, as I am yours. This new profile friends from the town of Loja in southern Ecuador, to the Canary Islands.
Perhaps the most curious relationship that has given me blogging activity was the pen friendship I share with the English architect Alberto Campo-Baeza, who gave cn my page by accident, finding his book "The Idea Built "was in my" TOP 5 "models most important books of modern architecture.

How often do you post? Does it represent an effort to posterity with regularity?

feel like I'm in a good rhythm of posting when I can post 3 or 4 post per week. However, I am very consicente that this figure is very ambitious.
The regular publication muco depends on how much work you have. I had a couple long without blogging, as a result of my activities as an architect. These periods were up to 3 or 6 months.

Do you reported blog income? Can you live on this posting?

I have some income, but very few. I have not taken the profits of 3 years of advertising. I suppose one puedearreglárselas
to live like this, but in my opinion a good blog is that it makes you like, to share through it that you love.

How do you promote your blog?

promoted it very little. Lately, I've created a Facebook group, and through him to inform interested when I posted something new.

How would you describe your readers? Do you have a loyal audience?

There's everything from the writing to ask you to write something again soon, to write you to insult qu. Every reader who has a tinge maniefiesta unique.

Any other blogs you follow on a daily or frequently?

I'm aware of "culture B", the blog of Juanfernando Andrade, who writes about film, music and literature. The English Federico García Barba has a good blog on urbanism, called "Islands and Territory." Stranger blogs as "The Other Child Tenderness", who was in a sour political events of Ecuador, or "Neapolis" by Jaime Izurieta, speaking of planning, architecture and society.
addition, frequently visited blogs of architecture "Life Without Buildings", "A Daily Dose of Architecture", "Archtectural Rumminations" or "schnitzel with potatoes" of Argentine architect and writer Gus Nielsen.

your blog How do you evolve in the future?

Actually, I have no idea! What I can predict is that I will lay some of my blog post to publish in a book that I am ready to end this year.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a blog?

The basic advice I dare to give it, if you're going to start a blog, write just about what you're passionate about. But do not try!
Blogs are something like the Tamagotchi. Without constant attention, they die, or, better said, are the dead.
A blog should be something to do with taste, but do not be born nor the inclination nor the dedication.
